This course will provide a hands-on scaling experience for dental hygienists that is designed to enhance scaling efficacy and ideal postural ergonomics in every quadrant. The workshop will also help prevent work related pain, musculoskeletal injuries, and disability. This workshop will include a presenentation with photos, and video clips while working on a typodont/sim unit to practice and learn advanced conventional and reinforced scaling techniques and ergonomics in every quadrant while using sharpen free instruments.

Attendees will receive some personalized instruction while scaling to improve instrumentation skills, and postural ergonomics for career enhancement.

Each attendee will receive the author's book entitled; "Reinforced Periodontal Instrumentation Techniques and Ergonomics for the Dental Care Provider" as a reference to practice the techniques learned in the workshop.


Learning objectives:

The participant will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an ideal grasp with optimal intra-oral and extra-oral fulcrum rests while using advanced conventional and reinforced scaling techniques.
  • Implement principles on how to remove burnished calculus by using sharpen free instruments.
  • Demonstrate how to protect their hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, neck and back from pain while scaling to ensure career longevity.
  • Implement ideal postural strategies around the patient chair while scaling in every quadrant in either a seated position or while standing.


Ms. Diane Millar

RDH, MA - Newport Coast, California

Diane Millar has been a dental hygienist for over 40 years, and she received a Masters Degree in Education from Pepperdine University in 2009. She was an educator at the University of Southern California, Cerritos College, and is currently an instructor at West Coast University where she has taught for over 15 years. She also received the Sigmi Phi Alpha award in 2021 for her accomplishments in the dental hygiene profession.
